In 1955, Franklin Life Insurance Company was the first nongovernmental entity to install an “electronic brain,” the giant Univac. By 1966, the company had set up its third addition to the digital system that stored information on tape. The size of these computers meant an additional building. By 1970, the number of requests for computing services had resulted in a subsidiary business, Franklin Data Services, to coordinate the development and sale of computer services.

The First National Bank, located at the southwest corner of Fifth and Adams Streets, has undergone three major remodeling projects since 1921. The last renovation started in 1972 and cost an estimated $4.5 million. The building was expanded with a unified exterior design. The new facade of precast concrete columns and bronze glass can be seen as it begins to cover the older portion of the building.
